Consultant Geneticists may not always be part of the regular cleft team appointments and patients may be referred to them separately.

Where a patient may be suspected of having a syndrome or alteration in their genes, they may require further investigation with genetic testing. This can sometimes help in the management of the patient and increase the understanding of the inheritance of the condition.
