Transforming Cleft

Overview of organisation

Website: www.transformingcleft.org

Transforming Cleft was co-founded in 1999 by Jackie Elton, a British entrepreneur born with cleft lip and palate, and Jo Jamieson, a Scottish-Canadian international development leader.

Transforming Cleft's mission is to partner locally and innovate globally so that children and families in under-resourced communities access Comprehensive Cleft Care. Their vision is to ensure all children affected by cleft lip and palate experience full rehabilitation and community inclusion with the support of a trusted local health team.

Aims of organisation

Over 25 years, Transforming Cleft has built a network of 30+ local partners across five continents, with an emphasis on supporting local research, openness to experimentation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Examples of progress made or particular achievements

Achievements include establishing Ethiopia's first academic speech therapy programme at Addis Ababa University, launching an innovative community-based care model and multidisciplinary cleft centre of excellence in Chennai, India, and co-founding the Circle of Cleft Professionals (CoCP).

Opportunities to get involved

Transforming Cleft welcomes collaboration with experienced mentors, researchers, and clinicians, and partners with local cleft care teams at hospitals, non-profits, and universities in resource-constrained regions worldwide.

Consider joining the Circle of Cleft Professionals (CoCP), a global network of 1,300+ cleft professionals from 100+ countries, advancing Comprehensive Cleft Care in Low and Middle-Income Countries. Professionals of all disciplines are welcome to apply. Transforming Cleft also hosts the biannual Solutions for Comprehensive Cleft Care (S4CCC) Conferences, supported by 11 global cleft NGOs.

Support Transforming Cleft’s Work

UK donors can receive a tax receipt through the UK Fund for Charities. 100% of donations support Comprehensive Cleft Care, thanks to the generosity of a private foundation that covers TC’s administrative and fundraising costs.

The Journeymakers monthly giving program, is a strategic and cost-efficient way of demonstrating ongoing support for local cleft teams in Low and Middle-Income countries.
